A Sweet Tradition

On Aug. 16, Merrill Dairy Bar —  affectionately known as the Merrill Whippy Dip — in Merrill, Michigan, had the pleasure of hosting 58 members of the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, Michigan. The sisters were celebrating Sister’s profession of Perpetual Vows, which were received by Bishop Robert D. Gruss of Saginaw.

During the summer of 2021, Bishop Kelley High School welcomed two members of the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, MI: Sister Mary Hanah Doak, RSM and Sister Mary Elisha Glady, RSM.

The Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, Michigan are a refoundation of the original order of the Sisters of Mercy. The community was established in 1973 as a separate religious institute in Alma, Mich. They have about 100 Sisters worldwide with 13 communities across the U.S. and four communities overseas.

Sister Regina Marie, a member of the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, Michigan, is the new principal of St. Clare of Assisi Catholic School in Edwards, Colo. Sister Regina Marie has served at St. Clare of Assisi for the past three years, teaching both K-8 music and middle school theology. Prior to coming to St. Clare, Sister was in Rome where she had the opportunity to study at some of the pontifical universities.

If a word can sum up the last few years for Sr Mary Lily, it might be ‘mercy’.

Until recently she was known as Sarah Lovegrove, a law and arts student at the University of Notre Dame in Sydney.

Now a novice with the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, Michigan, the 24-year-old has returned to her hometown and her old uni, where her vocation began to take shape, to work in its chaplaincy team.

“Immediately after both hurricanes, Sister Miriam was on site at Catholic Charities,” Boxie continued. “When the pandemic hit, she did not close the doors. She knew she could not turn her back at a time when people were hurting and needed assistance.”

Sister Miriam MacLean, R.S.M., Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Southwest Louisiana, was honored as the Jack V. Doland Citizen of the Year at the 30th annual Women’s Fall Conference in October at the Lake Charles Civic Center.

In a joyful ritual Mass, five women professed their perpetual vows as Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, Michigan at the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption in Saginaw on Monday, Aug. 16. 

Sister Maria Juan Anderson, Sister Andrea Marie Lee, Sister Maria Crucis Garcia, Sister Miriam Fidelis Reed and Sister Brigid Mary Meeks each professed their perpetual vows. During the Mass, each sister professed her vows, reading from a handwritten formulary, while kneeling before Mother Mary McGreevy, Superior General of the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma.

“Our new patients, when they first come in, often they haven’t received medical care for years — and they’ve been treated as ‘less than,’ over and over, again and again. So it starts with hospitality, and how we greet and receive people, and being there for our patients, not in a judgmental way. And just letting them know that we are really here to serve them. And that’s our biggest goal in what we do here.”

Although it was scary to give up my plans for the future (which included a career in medicine) and face the unknowns of separation from my family in order to enter a convent, it gave me so much peace to trust that not only was God in control, but that He would lead me to discover it and give me the grace I needed to respond with alacrity. “For Sister Mary Lisa Renfer, serving as medical director at the St. Mary's Legacy Clinic is her dream job. 'I didn't think you could be a sister and a doctor. Turns out you can.' …The mobile family practice clinic serves about 300 patients, scattered over six rural communities. Most have no insurance. Many have chronic conditions, like diabetes and hypertension, and had been without regular medical care for years before coming to the clinic, said Sister Mary Lisa.”

“With the social distancing and all that entails, it’s been a real change in the way that we’re taking care of our patients,” she said, adding that it’s not easy seeing families unable to visit their loved ones, and seeing the patients, who are left without communication to the outside world…Being first a religious sister and second a physician has given Sister Grace Miriam a different perspective on how to treat these patients with extra care, she said.
